About Helen

I have been teaching for the last three years, and have worked with young people from age 7 to 18, with a variety of physical and different educational learning needs. I have tutored several students one on one, in order to gain higher grades at GCSE, and gain confidence in re-taking A levels to get a place at university. I believe that learning should be fun, creative, diverse, and aim to use a lot of different methods to keep it different!

I believe that my experience tutoring, as well as academic record in school and during my undergraduate and master’s degrees mean that I am able to tutor a wide range of subjects to students studying at the moment. I have worked with children with special needs during my work as a bushcraft and watersports instructor, including physical needs, and learning needs such as ADHD, autism, and Asperger’s. I also volunteer with vulnerable young people in Scotland with a charity. I am therefore able to adapt my approach to suit the individual requirements of different students who need additional support. I also have a recent PVG check.

About the lesson

I have worked as a Geography tutor for both A level and GCSE, having studied Geography for my undergraduate degree at Oxford. I recently graduated with a Master's in Public Health from the University of Edinburgh. For A Level I studied English Literature, History, and Geography, and can offer tuition in these three areas at A level, as well as for History, Geography, English, English Literature, Maths, and Religious Education at GCSE level. I have spent the last 6 years working with young people for the National Citizen Service as a Senior Mentor, and as a watersports and outdoor instructor.

During my undergraduate studies at Oxford I tutored students to prepare for GCSE exams, and re-sit A-level exams. For this, I created a unique study plan for each student, and created a shared Google Drive so that they could access these resources online. I focused strongly on the mark scheme, syllabus, and past papers, ensuring that the student honed their exam technique finely, in order to squeeze as many marks out of the exam as possible. I also tested them verbally on their knowledge to see if they could remember it without their notes, as a preparation for a closed book exam. I would often bring in books related to the subject they were revising, such as Felicity Aston’s ‘Alone in Antarctica’, when revising the Polar Regions in Geography, to stimulate discussion, set the revision in a wider context, and aim to instil a passion for the subject and a love of learning about it.
