About Tanja

I am native German speaker and study German literature and linguistics in Zurich, Switzerland.

As I have worked in a private school in Edinburgh, Scotland, I have been co-teaching classes from P3 up to S6, and have been working individually with students from S2 to S6. I have prepared students for their German GSCE, Higher, and Advanced Higher (A-Levels) exams and am very familiar with those.

Apart from that, I have been teaching German to young professionals in Switzerland. These classes were conducted in a small setting with private classes or small classes with 3 - 5 students to maximise their learning progress. The levels were from beginners (A1) to intermediate (B2) and included exam preparation for the Goethe exams which are important evidence for employers and schools in German-speaking countries.

About the lesson

I believe that the most important thing in learning a language is to get confidence. Making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process, and I want my students to talk as much as possible in the target language.

As I have taught German to high school students in the UK, I am familiar with the British school system, especially with German GSCE, Higher, and Advanced Higher (A-Levels). Preparing students for the oral exams includes practising the tasks (role plays, picture-based tasks, conversation) and/or elaborate on possible conversation questions and answers for Higher and Advanced Higher (A-Levels) exams. This means to strengthen and extend your vocabulary and helping in finding more sophisticated and accurate expressions to improve your skills.

I have also taught adults from absolute beginners to intermediate (A1 - B2). Especially in conversation, it is essential to use the target language as often as possible, and by creating a comfortable and safe environment, I encourage even shy students to talk and to be confident.

Typically, I would start a lesson with a short recap of what has been done and discussed in the previous lesson. I would check if there are any problems or difficulties that still need to be explained. While I think that explaining grammar is vital to acquire a foreign language and to improve your skills, I try to encourage my students to practise as much as they can. Be this with written exercises or speaking sessions. Furthermore, I love to include cultural topics of German-speaking countries, such as references to movies, songs or books, but also information about cultural customs, places, foods, and people.
