About James
I've been tutoring math, physics, chemistry, and Spanish at levels from middle school to early undergraduate for seven years. I also graduated from the University of Washington in 2013 with a BS in Geology and then taught math, physics, and earth sciences in middle/high school classrooms for three years. The students I tutor privately outside of school get A's in the classes I help them with, while the students I teach in class......don't always do as well. Luckily for the students I tutor outside of class, I don't give them their grades. If there's anything I know in life, it's teaching math, physics, chemistry, and Spanish.

I'm an experienced math, physics, chemistry, Spanish tutor/teacher from Bakersfield, California. I mostly tutor students between the ages of 11 and 19.
Like with any skill, I believe that maths, natural sciences, and foreign languages are learned best through a sort of input-output routine. Foreign languages are not so much process oriented as maths and natural sciences are, but similar principles apply. In order for someone to develop ability in any particular topic, this someone must first be given information about what they will be learning. Next, they should be shown how to accomplish their task in some detail. Then, they should be prompted to attempt the task themselves with the assistance of a teacher/tutor. Finally, they should be prompted to complete the task without any help.
This process can take time, but it almost always works if each step is conducted effectively!

I write this letter to attest to the notable work performance and strong work ethic of James Leask. James and I worked together at Nanjing Foreign Language School, Xianlin Campus in Nanjing, China during the ’15-’16 academic year (09/2015 - 06/2016). During this time James did not only teach and manage his assigned classes; he also assisted school administrators and myself with curriculum development and college advising. Considering James’s relatively small background in teaching, the quality of his work was good. He was also a pleasure to work with, and he related well to his coworkers.
James taught physics to four 10th grade classes and AP physics to one 11th grade class. From what many students said about his classes, the classes engaged the students well, and the learning material was adequately challenging. In a few observations of James’s teaching it was noted that he demonstrated strong classroom management skills and great balance between passive/active learning activities.
James’s contributions to curriculum and college advising are also worth noting. I recall that on more than one occasion he had come prepared for curriculum development meetings with statistics on the high school curriculums of incoming freshmen at several prestigious American universities. Furthermore, he had also obtained for these meetings the high school curriculums of other nearby schools. James’s input here was fairly impactful.
College advising was an area that James also decided to invest in. He worked with several teachers on finding American universities that would match well with the study interests of the students. He also created a great online applet to make the process of writing recommendation letters for the students’ college applications much easier for both the students and the teachers. We are still using his online applet this year.
After working with James Leask for this one year, I would describe him as brilliant, self-driven, active, friendly, and reliable. I appreciate his hard-work and enthusiasm last year, and I wish him well in his future endeavors.View more recommendations
