About Moos

I started teaching physics and math full-time almost 2 years ago, and haven't looked back. Teaching first-year college and university courses has been my specialty, but I have plenty of experience tutoring at high school level, as well as upper year undergraduate level.

With a PhD in Theoretical Physics under my belt, many years of academic research and several scientific publications, I have both a broad and deep understanding of math and physics that I try to share with all my students. I have 6 years of experience as a teaching assistant, both in Canada and abroad.

I have also worked at the public library, running programs on scientific literacy and helping patrons with their inquiries. This means working with people from very diverse backgrounds with very different levels of education, something I find valuable in my tutoring work as well.

Lastly, I have been doing private tutoring and lessons for over three years. I am comfortable teaching any high school or undergraduate level physics, as well as math subjects like algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus.

I will work with you to pinpoint the root of your struggles with a given a subject. Starting from there, we will explore the material with patience and curiosity, during which you will set the pace.

It is very important to me to always keep in sight the connection to the real world, and to make frequent links to things that actually interest you. Math and physics can be found anywhere, from plant biology to video games and from hockey to airplanes. In my experience, this encourages active participation and promotes a deeper understanding of the material.

Because you cannot learn math or physics without practice, I will carefully select homework problems to match your level and your interests. During sessions, we will discuss these problems and work through other examples to illustrate physical and mathematical concepts.

I prefer an informal and flexible structure, where you should feel free to interrupt me and steer the lesson into one direction or another. If more structure is needed, for example to prepare for a specific test or exam, we can set up a lesson plan and schedule together.

For virtual tutoring by webcam, I can use your choice of Zoom, Skype, Whatsapp, Discord or Jitsi. Sharing a virtual notebook, which is very important for working with equations and diagrams, can be done using the free version of Microsoft OneNote (or other options if needed). It's useful, but not necessary, to have access to a tablet. I will contact you before our first session to work out these details and, if needed, help you with the technology.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

Even as a child, my curiosity frequently had me wondering why the natural world works the way it does. In school I quickly took to math, physics and chemistry. I decided to continue my studies in physics because it combines the deep, abstract understanding of mathematics with the real world. It's like solving a puzzle, and then checking your answer by observing the universe.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I love physics for its elegance in describing the laws of nature. The way that seemingly different concepts fit together seamlessly, connected by an intricate network of mathematical ideas, is extremely beautiful to me. In teaching, I try to convey that beauty to my students. You do not need a strong math background to see these connections and analogies! Physics is everywhere around you, you only have to open your eyes to it.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

It's truly wonderful when a student finally realizes that a certain concept or subject is not as difficult as they thought it was. Getting to that point requires patience and persistence, as well as creativity. Sometimes I need to explain a formula in four different ways before it happens, and I am always glad to do so, as the result is all the more rewarding.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had some excellent teachers in high school, who encouraged me to explore beyond the text book and ask critical questions. Without them, I would not have become a physicist, nor a teacher. Sadly, I feel that many physics teachers take the wrong approach, focusing too much on the math and not enough on conceptual understanding. A good or bad teacher can make a huge difference, not only for your grades but also for your interests and even your career path!
  • What are your keys to success?

I always look at the environment around me for inspiration, when explaining a concept in physics. A water bottle, a table, someone riding their bicycle outside the window. Keeping that connection with the real world, whenever possible, is key to understanding and to stimulating your curiosity.
