About Kathy
I have been teaching 34 years. Fifteen years as a first grade teacher. 2 years as a Lead Title I Teacher-reading and math. 4 years as a second grade teacher. 1 year as a 6th grade English teacher. 14 years as a Title I Reading Teacher. As a reading teacher I work with 9 groups of 5 children each day. Each child shows different levels of growth throughout the year.

I am a Master Reading Teacher. My expertise lies in Pre K-5, but I am certified to teach K-8. I have been a Reading Specialist for 14 years in Isle of Wight County. I have extensive training in Reading Recovery and exposure to the fundamentals of Wilson Reading. I believe strongly in phonics and phonemic awareness when teaching a child to read. Children also have to learn how to read before they can use reading to learn. Our children have gaps in blending sounds together, using word endings, breaking words apart, and sight word and vocabulary development. Once a child has the fundamentals of word knowledge down and fluent, I believe then comprehension can be addressed. I use Running Records to assess, and then I instruct where the difficulty lies. I believe all children can learn how to read, but all can't be taught the same way. Each child learns differently and finding out what works for each child will make all children successful.
