We can dig into theory and unpack the nuts and bolts of music, but I personally find the best way to learn is to get playing. My approach is to takes songs from artists you like to listen to and unpack them, reducing them down to their simplest form (chords and melodies) and working our way to playing the song as heard in the recording.
