About Jade
I am a singing tutor with 4 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance alongside three years of singing in a professional gospel choir that performed in major venues and recorded with established gospel artists. My gospel choir experience is the foundation of my teaching — I learned the tradition not academically but through immersion in a community of singers who had been singing it their whole lives, and the understanding of vocal culture I gained from that immersion is something no conservatory training provides. I also teach gospel vocal workshops for community choirs and church ensembles, and these experiences keep my teaching grounded in the tradition's communal and spiritual roots.

My singing teaching is rooted in the gospel and soul tradition where the voice is understood as a channel for deep emotional and spiritual expression, and this shapes my teaching from the smallest technical detail to the broadest musical aspiration. I teach vocal agility — the runs, riffs, whoops, turns, and melismatic ornaments that characterize gospel and soul singing — as a systematic technical curriculum rather than as something students either have or do not have, because these skills can be learned and developed with the right exercises and the right conceptual understanding. My approach to breath in the gospel tradition emphasizes the specific relationship between breath and emotional delivery — the held breath that creates anticipation, the sudden breath that creates urgency, the sustained breath that creates yearning — rather than treating breath as a purely mechanical support function. Dynamic contrast in gospel singing is extreme by comparison with most other vocal styles, and I teach the technical management of this contrast — how to produce a whisper and a shout from the same vocal position, how to control the speed of crescendo, how to recover vocal focus after a peak moment. Call and response is taught as both a performance technique and a compositional principle. I use historical recordings — Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke — as technical study materials alongside contemporary artists because understanding the lineage of the tradition enriches appreciation and deepens technique. My teaching goal is a singer whose voice carries genuine emotional weight.
