About Shamel
My name is Shamel Basaria, and I went to Vanderbilt University where I majored in neuroscience and physics (3.9+ GPA). At Vanderbilt, I held various teaching assistant roles in science courses, including in a dual undergraduate and graduate course. I also served as a Section Leader for Stanford's Code-in-Place initiative to teach the world how to code in Python (3 years). Since graduating, I have tutored elementary, middle, and high school students in mathematics subjects ranging from 3rd grade math to SSAT/SAT exam preparation. As for my extracurricular and leadership involvements, I was the Editor-in-Chief of the Vanderbilt Undergraduate Research Journal for 2 years, also serving on the legal committee (freshman year), as a reviewer for the natural sciences (freshman year), and as secretary (sophomore year). Furthermore, I served as the Events Director at the National Undergraduate Consortium on Scientific Journalism, where I helped host a conference with a Nobel Prize nominee, Pulitzer Prize winner, and scientific YouTuber with millions of subscribers on scientific journalism (with over 400 registrants). In addition to scientific research journalism, I served in leadership roles in 3 other organizations, for at least 2 continuous years, focused on humanitarian work as well as engineering (2 presidencies/vice-presidencies, 1 project development chair).

I work with students one-on-one to explain topics that they would like to understand, explaining concepts in more than one way with plentiful examples to be able to solidify knowledge. I focus on first conceptual and then applied understanding that utilizes those concepts. I love working with students and seeing their minds open as they start to understand confusing topics, and my aim is to make the learning process a bit more fun for students. I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school students, and below are my qualifications and courses that I have taken that I am confident teaching: Mathematics: elementary school math all the way through AP Calculus BC and post-AP calculus math like Multivariable Calculus Physics: AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, advanced electricity and magnetism Chemistry: General chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry Biology: General biology, introduction to neuroscience, neurological diseases, immunology Psychology/sociology: General psychology Coding: Python Highlights: top 5% overall MCAT score in the country, with 100th percentile scores in physics/general chemistry/organic chemistry section, 96th percentile for biology/biochemistry, and 93rd percentile for psychology/sociology; scientific researcher at Yale School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (research fellowship); graduated from Vanderbilt University with neuroscience and physics majors

Shamel has been a colleague of mine whom I have worked closely with for 3 years at Vanderbilt University. He is one of the most academically accomplished individuals I know. He has a great ability to break down complicated concepts into easy to understand bits. Furthermore, his strong research background gives him insights into how basic science concepts are relevant and applicable to the broader field and the real world, enabling him to provide important contextualization that will enhance understanding of MCAT topics. Thus, I strongly recommend Shamel for MCAT tutoring!
I’ve known Shamel for five years as a close friend, and I can say without hesitation that he is one of the most thoughtful and intellectually curious people I know. Even though we come from very different academic and professional backgrounds, Shamel has consistently offered me insightful, interdisciplinary advice that has shaped the way I approach problems in my own field. He has a rare ability to bridge knowledge across domains and communicate complex ideas in a way that is both approachable and deeply informed.

He has the experience and expertise to be a great teacher and mentor, as well as the people and communication skills to pass on the information.
Shamel is incredibly intelligent and excellent at explaining difficult concepts simply and quickly. He's an incredible scientist and researcher. I wholeheartedly recommend him for any math or science subjects.
I've known Shamel for the past 1.5 years as a research fellow. He has developed an extensive background and skillsets in both basic laboratory techniques and bioinformatics. Throughout our time working together, it has become very clear that Shamel is not only proficient in his technical work but also very good in communicating complex concepts to individuals with little to no prior knowledge of his research. He has the ability to simplify complex ideas which will make him a valuable teacher.

He has a deep knowledge of Maths and Science and has extensive research experience. He can also convey complex ideas simply and guide students of any level to a deeper understanding of the subject.
Shamel has provided me a lot of guidance on tackling challenging topics like calculus, physics, organic chemistry, and biology in a tutoring capacity. Although he primarily serves as a tutor on here, I see him more as a mentor and as a friend.
I think a tutor just teaches about different content areas and clears up confusion. But by going above and beyond as a mentor by giving me life and career advice, I have accomplished so much. He helped me to go over my essays for various summer programs and provided valuable feedback without which my success would not have been possible. He is also incredibly humble; he knows a lot more than he lets on! Such humility makes him easy to approach whenever I need help with anything. He is also incredibly reliable, and is prompt to respond to all messages.
To whoever is reading this: Shamel is a great mentor to work with. You are in great hands with him. He will meet you where you are at and work alongside you to get you where you need to be. He won't just give the answer; instead, he will guide you there to lead you to a deeper understanding.Shamel is really great at understanding that people have different backgrounds and understanding of the same material. He seems to have a solid foundation in mathematics and excels at explaining concepts in an easy-to-understand manner.
I've known Shamel since 2020 and been close friends since. We worked together at the Vanderbilt Undergraduate Research Journal, where Shamel has shown immense leadership, academic rigor, and dedication to fostering intellectual discourse. He has great patience and has an exceptional ability to break down complex topics, which would make him an excellent tutor and mentor. Shamel is an insightful, thoughtful, and caring individual - I can guarantee that anyone would be lucky to have Shamel on their team or as their tutor.
