About Derek
Recent U of C CS grad with Distinction, 3.97 GPA, Dean's List all four years. I took the exact classes you're in. I also have 2.5 years of professional tutoring experience from 2020 to mid 2022, so I know how to break things down for different learning styles.
I actually build what I teach. Two years as CTO of an AI startup means I've used these concepts in production, not just read about them. When I explain recursion, it's because I still think about the call stack every week at work. When I teach databases, it's because I've designed schemas under real production load.
First lesson is free. 30 minute intro call to see if we're a fit. Zero pressure. I care about your actual learning, not billable hours. If your exam is in two days and you need one intensive 4 hour session instead of weekly drips, I'll tell you that. Clear, honest feedback. If something I'm teaching isn't landing, I'll try a different angle or say let me look this up, I want to give you the right answer.

I'm Derek, a University of Calgary Computer Science graduate (With Distinction, 3.97 GPA, Dean's List all four years) and a working full-stack AI engineer. I co-founded an AI startup where I've spent the last two years shipping real production systems: LLM agents, RAG pipelines, distributed infrastructure on AWS. That matters for tutoring because I'm not teaching from a textbook. I teach what I actually use.
I tutor best at the intersection of fundamentals and applied work: Python, data structures and algorithms, software engineering, databases, and AI/LLM concepts for students who want to go beyond just calling the API. I especially enjoy helping U of C students in CPSC 331, CPSC 471, CPSC 457, and CPSC 313 because I took those classes recently and know where they get hard.
My approach: first principles, then practice. I want you to understand why something works before memorizing how. I'll ask you to explain your mental model back to me so I can find the actual gap, not the surface symptom. Sessions are calm, structured, and end with a short recap so you leave with something concrete.
Sessions over Zoom or Google Meet. In-person also available in NW Calgary if you're near U of C.
