I use a classical, Bel Canto approach to singing which sets up students with a strong foundation for singing that they can then use for any genre of music. I begin lessons by teaching students useful warm-ups which they can use in their own practice time to perfect their technique and stretch their voice to avoid injury while singing repertoire. Then, we move on to learning the music, which is selected based upon my expert assessment of each individual voice. I will typically select repertoire from the classical realm, but I am open to hearing students' suggestions regarding repertoire they would like to sing. I then make the determination of whether a piece is appropriate for each student based upon their voice type, experience, and tone. I am comfortable teaching pieces in Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and English. My approach is friendly, yet particular. I want students to experience the joy of singing while still challenging themselves to learn more and improve every week. I gladly teach beginners all the way to more experienced music majors pursuing their undergraduate degree. However, I also gladly accept students of any major who are willing to learn and dedicate time to the joy of singing!
I am a first-year Master's student for Vocal Performance at Ball State University. I am also a graduate assistant for the Voice area, and I currently have nine students in my studio. I graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor's in Music Education and have experience teaching a variety of instruments, including violin, piano, and voice. I have been teaching for a little over four years and feel confident in both a classroom setting and one-on-one with students. I have had a total of 20 students on various instruments, and I plan to keep growing my studio. As a teacher, I realize that I never stop learning, and I am constantly making an effort to improve my existing skills. My students thus far have felt very successful and have appreciated my advice and insight during our lessons. I am an excellent communicator, comfortable using a variety of platforms, including Skype and Zoom, and am prompt in responding to student texts and emails so that my students have the optimum music experience. I am very personable and approachable, and my students know that they can come to me with any concerns they might have!
Nathan taught my daughter piano lessons in kindergarten and first grade. He was always professional and fun!
Nathan was a wonderful teacher for my daughter for voice and violin. He was especially good at choosing pieces he knew she would enjoy. He found a good balance of encouraging her, and challenging her. She really liked her lessons with him, and learned a lot.
Nathan is a very reliable talented young man in voice, piano and violin. He was very patient with my daughter and makes learning fun. Over the years, he has shared his music abilities at church and for the community.
