I use accessible concepts to teach abstract ones. For Example, to teach positive and negative numbers, addition and subtractions, I create a jelly bean bank. How many jelly beans you have or owe is offset by how many jelly beans you get or take out. It helps visualize the concepts. I use games as well to understand the techniques required for factoring before learning the mathematical technique.
