About Warren

As my resume shows, I’ve been a Boy Scout leader for many years. Among our activities, we conduct an annual 50-mile hike in the California High Sierra mountains and try to spend a few days at 10,000 feet or higher.
About twenty years ago, after ten miles of strenuous hiking, we dragged ourselves into a high Sierra campsite and discovered we were going to share it with a young student. We had a lot of extra food, so as we were getting dinner ready we decided to invite him to join us. (You can’t walk into a campsite at 10,000 feet and ignore your neighbors. It really is bad manners.)
I walked over to his tent to strike up a conversation. He smiled at me and pulled out his Japanese-English/English-Japanese dictionary. A hah! I spoke no Japanese and he spoke very little English, but between the dictionary, pantomiming, and a growing mountain man camaraderie, we learned that he had just graduated from university. As a graduation present before returning to law school, his parents paid for a round-trip ticket to the United States and a tour permit to hike the John Muir Trail with a Mount Whitney (the highest point in the lower forty-eight states) stopover! All this was revealed as I encouraged my friends to pass the dictionary back and forth. We even managed to tell a couple of jokes in the process.
It had been a long day, so eventually, we crawled into our sleeping bags.
Come dawn, we shared some breakfast and he offered us some packaged Japanese cookies as a parting gift. Not to be outdone, we started rummaging through our backpacks and I found my thermal hot chocolate cup with the Boy Scout logo. A perfect souvenir.

About the lesson

I would initially explain what I could do, lay out a menu, and offer choices.
First, I would describe the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement-3, a wide-ranging examination of K-14 skills that would reveal areas of weakness and strength.
If phonetic skills are intact, we know what we can gloss over. Depending upon English comprehension, spelling, and composition skills, we learn would where we need to spend more time.
Conversational English is an important area. I would pick up a couple of copies of Owen Parry’s “A Faded Coat of Blue,” the story of a Welsh immigrant who comes to the United States after service in British India and becomes enmeshed in his new country’s civil war.
In the course of our reading, I’d take notes on problem vocabulary, grammar, jargon, idioms, cultural differences, etc., and turn them into future lessons.
After meeting the client’s perceived needs, I put on my professional hat and recommend areas for improvement that we missed recognizing that it is the client that steers this ship.
