About Rachel
I have both theory and practical knowledge surrounding disability. As well as completing a first class degree in Disability Studies with honors, I have worked alongside disabled people for over 8 years.
I have volunteered with SEND children in schools and adults at a night-time disco (wonderfully entitled 'Wednesday club'). Moreover, I worked as a personal assistant for someone with athetoid cerebral palsy. I have also volunteered and then worked at a day service charity working with adults with additional needs. Finally, I worked at a supported living house for adults with autism and other additional needs.
I have then gone on to study as an adult nurse. I have seen the lack of education surrounding treating people with additional needs. The reason I want to do this tutoring is that I want this to change, in all aspects of society. There is little proper training for companies, healthcare workers, or teachers regarding equality for disabled people and I want to see this changed. I am currently taking a break from my nursing studies and see this as a prime opportunity to start filling this gap in knowledge.

These lessons will be about the basics of disability, taken from the approach of the social model of disability. Topics include creating a better working environment, equality of opportunity, understanding neurodiversity, and the laws surrounding disability equality.
There is a constant and evolving need to become more inclusive and diverse in society. However, statistics show that disabled people are constantly left behind in this strive for equality and often both inadvertently and deliberately discriminated against. I want to see this changed.
This course can be used for people in business to create a more equal environment. It will also be useful for healthcare workers, where, from experience, I know there is a lack of decent education surrounding disabled people and creating equal environments. Furthermore, teachers, teaching assistants, and others involved in education could also benefit from exploring what being disabled means and how diverse needs can be met.
