About Vivien

I have been tutoring younger students since I was 16. Growing up in the UK, I went through a very exam-focused school system where keeping up with your work and building good study habits was really important. I found that I enjoyed helping younger students with the things I had struggled with myself and passing on the study techniques that helped me in high school.

I later attended UC Berkeley, where I majored in Molecular Biology. Studying at Berkeley gave me the opportunity to build on what I learned in high school and explore STEM subjects in much greater depth. It also helped me see how the basic concepts we learn in school connect to much more complicated ideas. I especially enjoy chemistry, biology, and mathematics, and I love being able to help students understand these subjects rather than just memorize them.

I am now starting at my dream school to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. I have always loved animals, and being able to make a difference in their lives is something that means a lot to me. I think this same desire to help people is a big part of why I enjoy tutoring.

When I tutor, I want students to feel comfortable admitting when they don't understand something. I know how frustrating it can be to feel like everyone else understands a topic while you are struggling to keep up. My goal is to break things down, work through problems together, and help students build the confidence to tackle the material on their own.

About the lesson

My goal is to help middle and high school students navigate the areas they find particularly challenging in school so they can feel more confident and capable in their classes. Whether they are working through difficult homework problems, struggling to understand a complex concept, or simply feeling like they have fallen behind, I want to be a resource they can rely on.

Growing up, I benefited from having a tutor who helped me catch up when I was struggling in school, so I understand firsthand how valuable a little extra support can be. I want to provide that same support to students and create an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building their understanding at their own pace.

My lessons will begin by having the student explain what they are finding difficult. From there, we will work through an explanation and conversation designed to strengthen their understanding of the topic rather than simply memorize an answer. We will then practice with problems that test their understanding and help identify any areas that may need additional attention.

Beyond individual lessons, I will also share study techniques and habits that helped me and other students stay organized, keep up with classwork, and feel more confident throughout high school. My goal is not only to help students with what they are struggling with today, but also to give them the tools and confidence to become more independent learners.
