About Candice
Personal Statement
The Child and Learning. Maria Montessori, education enthusiast and activist of furthering students' critical thinking skills, mothers the philosophy of education that I apply in my students’ educational journey. Key themes include guiding children toward self-sufficiency, or a "Help me to do it alone" attitude, the "absorbent mind," and education as a "help to life" rather than mere instruction. This ideology generates a child-centered classroom where the charge to education is at the hands of the learner and students are eager to perform amongst their peers.
One practice that is utilized to produce the independent student is “I do, we do, you do,” or, the Gradual Release of Responsibility, where the teacher serves to model a new skill or concept, teacher and students collaborate effectively to attain skill competency, and learners become proficient applicators of new information beyond the boundaries of the classroom. As this concept is nurtured and reinforced, students gain the ability to master skills and make a routine practice of relating what they have learned to what they do in their daily lives.
With this brief personal statement, I hope to showcase who I am as an educator and define what empowers me to fuel young minds that will lead the worlds tomorrow. I strive to foster a safe environment for students to shed their fears of learning, to debunk the ideas that blockade educational achievement, and to serve as a vital member of the child’s educational alliance penetrating the barriers that obstruct cultivation of intellect at its greatest capacity.
