About Ella

I am currently a first-year DPhil in Inorganic Chemistry student at University of Oxford. I completed my BSc Chemistry at University College London (UCL) in 2019 where I received a first-class honours degree and a place on the UCL Mathematical and Physical Sciences Faculty (MAPS) Dean’s List.

I was employed by Excellence in Education (EIE) programme based in London from 2017 to 2018. This job required me to guide students through their homework and answer their questions, explaining concepts to a number of different age groups. My approach involved me explaining concepts from SAT Chemistry with greater complexity to GCSE and A-level exam students, incorporating some university content to help them gain a deeper understanding and maintain their interest. However, in delivering Mathematics lessons to primary school pupils, I would use real world examples to hook their interest. The key to delivering a fulfilling lesson is to make it as engaging as possible. I, like most other students, find it frustrating to sit through a long lecture with just the lecturer talking. In order to improve student’s learning experience, they need to be interested in the subject and understand the significance of what they are learning.

I am currently working as a demonstrator in undergraduate laboratory course at University of Oxford. My job is to help students set up experiments, answering related question and marking lab reports. I will ask them questions related to the course during the marking to examine whether they have known the concepts thoroughly. I prefer that students understand the content, rather than just memorising facts to answer questions and make conclusions. I value students’ train of thought and I want students to connect their ideas together. Therefore, I like to elicit answers from students to ensure that they are internalising knowledge, as well as asking their own questions when these questions do not make sense or do not completely flow logically; encouraging a conversation and greater engagement with material.

1. Real-life focus

I am keen on designing slides in the style of a story. I will start by introducing things that are related to our daily lives. For example, if the topic is about Chemical bonding, I will offer common situations where Chemical bonding is relevant and ask them the properties of that example (e.g. touching, feeling, why we apply them in different situations), and the difference between them. These examples help to encourage students to explore how the properties of a Chemical bond differ, and gradually guide them to the more technical concepts of the Chemical bonds – delivering target material lesson.

2. Question oriented

I like to pose a key question at the beginning which highlights what the class is trying to achieve. As we move along the class, students are meant to have more knowledge to help them answer the question. By doing this, I feel that key questions motivate students to target their learning and apply their knowledge to solve problems and demonstrate the relevance of what they are learning.

3. Deduction based

Consequently, I like to design classes based on deduction instead of giving them equations and conclusions directly.
