About Tiernan

My name is Tiernan Courell, and I am an Irish flute and whistle player originally from Sligo, now based in Scotland. In 2016, I relocated to Glasgow to study Traditional Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I had the privilege of working with some of the most talented young musicians in the world of traditional music.

In 2017, my university friends and I formed the band TRIP, and since its inception, we have had the honour of performing at prominent festivals such as Celtic Connections, Sligo Live, Belfast Winter Trad Fest, Viljandi Folk Music Festival, Orkney Folk Fest, and HebCelt. In 2022, we released our debut album A Drop for Neptune, which received widespread acclaim. We continue to perform and compose new music, eagerly anticipating what the future holds for the band.

Alongside my work with TRIP, I also maintain a thriving solo career. In 2017, I was honoured to win the prestigious All Ireland Senior Flute competition at the Fleadh Cheoil, and subsequently released my debut EP How’s About Now?. The EP features a blend of my own compositions and traditional tunes I have collected over the years. Since its release at the renowned Piping Live! festival, I have continued to perform and create music, constantly inspired by both the tradition and the creative process.

Teaching is another passion of mine. I find great joy in helping students discover their musical potential and guiding them on their journey of growth as musicians. With years of experience as a qualified primary school teacher, I bring a deep understanding of how to adapt my teaching methods to suit different learning styles and abilities. My aim is to create a positive and encouraging environment in which students, whether beginners or more advanced players, can thrive and develop their skills.

Composing, performing, and teaching are central to my life as a musician. I am excited to continue my journey, both as a performing artist and as a teacher, helping others explore and realise their full musical potential.

About the lesson

I offer personalized lessons that focus on your unique goals and aspirations. In our first session, we'll chat about what you hope to achieve and what interests you most. Together, we’ll pinpoint areas for improvement and set clear, achievable goals to guide our progress.

Whether you're a complete beginner learning flute or whistle from scratch, an intermediate player aiming to refine your skills, or an advanced musician seeking to hone your style, I can support your journey to the next level.

We can work on several key areas, including expanding your repertoire, incorporating tune variations, enhancing arrangement skills, and mastering ornamentation techniques. Additionally, we’ll focus on developing tone and embouchure, improving breathing control, refining articulation, and evolving your personal style.

I can teach from 5 years of age upwards.
