About Christopher

My Experience:

I have never taught in a classroom setting. My experience is limited to 1:1 tutoring, small group lectures & discussions, and fielding questions in a math study hall as a graduate student. I always look forward to meeting someone new, finding out how to connect with them, and then striving together to see how far we can reach.

My Expertise:

I am comfortable tutoring Math to Middle Schoolers through Undergraduates. I am most experienced in Statistics/Probability, Linear Algebra, and Calculus. My M.S. is in Applied Math, so for those wishing to learn the more practical side of it, I have programming experience in these subjects using Matlab, R, and Python languages.

Hello!

My Reason:

I love that eureka moment when a student truly "gets it". Instilling knowledge and confidence in another is such a wonderful gift for both the teacher and pupil. I find this is especially true for mathematics. I've encountered many learners that find the subject difficult, or boring, or just seemingly out of reach. This cannot be further from the truth. Sure, math is difficult, and sure not every single aspect will be exhilarating...but I truly believe that nothing is out of reach!

My Style:

My style is that of an encouraging Socratic guide. When the light of understanding fades to dim, and their groping efforts for truth begin to trip and stumble, then I am ready to spark just enough luminescence so that the next step in the path is revealed. Translated practically, I ask for clear articulation of their goals, the tools available and their previous efforts.

My Pupils:

I accept all students regardless of their aptitude or current level of understanding. We all start somewhere on that spectrum. I just ask that they be honest as to where they are, remain open-minded, and stay willing to take the next step.

My Methodology:

1. Initial Session:

I value spending time up front getting to know my pupils before jumping right in. It has been very beneficial in the long run when I understand their level of competency, past experiences, blind spots, and attitude toward the subject. Breaking down misconceptions while bolstering shortcomings is more important than immediately learning new material.

2. Typical Session:

I realize that students of all ages have a lot on their plates. My first priority is ensuring that they are capable of fulfilling the academic requirements set by their instructors. I strive to achieve this by delving deep into fewer problems as opposed to working through a heavy volume of redundant problems. I make use of any source material provided in their courses before referencing outside material. Although, sometimes all it takes is slight a correction to their lensing for them to see a concept clearly, so be prepared to be introduced to new/different descriptions of the underlying material as I see fit.
