About Kelley
I have always had a strong passion for teaching and giving back to my community, particularly serving students from lower-income and first-generation backgrounds. During college, I tutored a 10th-grade high school student for two years, supporting them not only in math but also by assisting with supplemental college essays. Additionally, I worked under contract as a substitute teacher for a few weeks, delivering math and English lessons to 6th through 8th graders. I also taught weekly science lessons to 4th and 5th graders for nearly three years during the school year. My experience includes serving as an assistant teacher for a middle school orientation summer program for two weeks. I also worked as a teaching assistant for an upper-level biology course, where I successfully learned how to break down dense content. Through these roles, I have gained significant experience as both a tutor and a mentor. I develop individualized learning plans for each student and approach teaching with the belief that every student is capable of success. What sets me apart is my ethos of reciprocity. I believe that while I bring knowledge to the table, my students also have much to teach me, helping me grow as an educator. I am highly adaptable to different learning styles and have experience working with special education students. While I prefer to teach life sciences, I am open to working with both high school and college students. I am a visual learner and am great at drawing out complex ideas—especially related to life sciences!

***I’m a visual learner and a strong illustrator, which I consider one of my most valuable assets as a tutor—especially when teaching life sciences.
We’ll start each session by setting goals. This helps both me and the student stay focused and accountable. For example, our goal might be understanding a new concept or completing a homework assignment.
If relevant and beneficial for the student’s learning style, I like to assign short pre-session videos (under 20 minutes) to help introduce the topic, spark curiosity, and identify any initial gaps in understanding. This way, the student can come in with questions and we can dive deeper into key areas.
At the end of each session, we’ll do a "Mastery Check"—a similar problem or scenario to what we covered, but with new numbers or context. This reinforces learning and helps both of us track progress.
I believe in a collaborative and adaptable approach that respects each student’s unique learning style and pace. Let’s make learning engaging and rewarding!
