About Leonardo

Hello, my name is Leonardo Mera, and I am currently completing my Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy at SUNY New Paltz. I have a strong passion for astronomy, physics, and mathematics, and I enjoy helping others better understand subjects that can sometimes feel challenging at first.

My academic experience includes working with real astronomical data through the DESI research program, where I analyzed galaxy survey data and learned how scientists use data analysis to study the universe. I also completed planetarium and observatory courses that gave me hands-on experience operating astronomical equipment, processing observational data, and presenting astronomy concepts in an engaging and understandable way.

In addition to my scientific background, I have experience working in fast-paced team environments and training others through my jobs at FedEx, Amazon, and Market 32. These experiences helped me develop strong communication, patience, leadership, and problem-solving skills that are important when teaching and working with students.

I aim to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, building confidence, and improving their understanding step by step. Whether it is astronomy, physics, or math, I always try to explain concepts clearly and connect them to real-world understanding whenever possible.

I believe I would be a strong teacher in astronomy, physics, and math because I combine real scientific experience with the ability to communicate and work well with others. Astronomy has always been one of my biggest passions, and throughout college I’ve had the opportunity to work directly with astronomical data, observatory instruments, and planetarium systems. During my research experience through the DESI program at Siena College, I analyzed galaxy survey data and learned how to identify trends using scientific plotting and data analysis techniques. This helped me better understand how science is done in real research environments and strengthened my analytical thinking skills.

My planetarium and observatory classes also gave me hands-on experience presenting astronomy concepts and working with real observational equipment. I learned how to explain scientific ideas in a way that keeps people engaged while also gaining technical experience collecting and processing astronomical data. These experiences helped me realize how much I enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others understand complex topics.

In addition to astronomy, I have experience with Python programming, cybersecurity, and data analysis, which support my abilities in both physics and mathematics. My work experience at FedEx, Amazon, and Market 32 taught me responsibility, communication, teamwork, and patience while working in fast-paced environments. Training new employees at FedEx especially helped me become more confident explaining processes clearly and helping others learn.

Overall, I believe my combination of scientific knowledge, hands-on experience, communication skills, and passion for learning would allow me to be an effective and engaging teacher in astronomy, physics, and math.
