About Dorothy

"I've been teaching singing from home for eighteen years now, and somewhere along the way I lost count properly, though it works out to roughly six hundred students taught across that time. I never trained formally in any grand way, just years of church choir, community concerts, and a genuine lifelong love of a good song well sung. My own children grew up around my lessons, and now my grandchildren do too, which gives the whole thing a lovely, homely feeling rather than anything terribly formal or clinical. I teach absolutely everyone, from tiny nervous six-year-olds to fellow grandparents finally getting round to something they always fancied trying themselves. My style is warm, unhurried, and thoroughly old-fashioned in the nicest possible way, built on decades of simply paying close attention to people. I don't chase exam results particularly, though plenty of my students have done wonderfully in them regardless, almost as a happy side effect of feeling genuinely comfortable and encouraged. What I care about most is watching someone who once said ""I can't sing a note"" leave my front room smiling and actually believing otherwise. After eighteen years, I still genuinely look forward to every single lesson on my calendar, which I think says quite a lot.

About the lesson

I've been teaching singing out of my own front room for so long now that half my former students bring their own children to me these days, which tells you something about how I like to work. Lessons start with a proper chat, always, because I've learned over the years that a nervous voice loosens up faster after a bit of kindness than after any warm-up exercise. Breathing gets taught the old-fashioned way, hand on the belly, simple and slow, exactly how my own singing teacher showed me more decades ago than I care to admit. I teach mostly by ear and by example, singing along until a student's confidence catches up with their curiosity, rather than drowning anyone in technical explanations too early. Every student picks songs they actually love, hymns, old favorites, pop songs their grandchildren play them, because I've never once seen forced repertoire produce a happy singer. I keep a little notebook for each student, jotting down small improvements I notice, and I read bits back to them now and then to show how far they've genuinely come. There's tea most lessons, and a fair bit of laughing, because I firmly believe a relaxed singer is always a better singer. I've taught long enough now to trust that patience works better than pressure, every single time.
