Graphic Design is more than just sprinkling magic fairy dust onto a computer and woila out pops an aesthetic masterpiece. Design is about problem-solving for a client or issue and that takes training beyond learning software. As a coach, I am adept at creating calisthenics to observe how you typically problem-solve and by getting to know you, I am able to push you beyond those boundaries to challenge your own weaknesses while expanding your strengths to grow as an innovative critical thinker. I believe in experimentation that leads to happy accidents if one can recognize those as innovations. There is no one right answer in design. Here are examples of student work: (concealed information)
I am a graphic design educator spending years honing my craft of teaching and coaching from basic to advanced levels of graphic design including developing professional portfolio. I began a teaching career and then went to grad school for an MFA in design. In 2018, I walked away from a tenured professor position because I believe that there should be more opportunities for people to learn beyond the expensive university system.
2007 - 2018 – Associate Professor tenured in 2012; Roger Williams University. Taught all levels of design to majors and non-majors. Most importantly continually modified my own course curriculum and loved teaching Design History, Intro to Design, and Typography. Developed a unique course called "Books, the life and love of..." which was/is a seminar about the history of the book from the angles of aesthetics, human behavior, science, history, literature/phil.
2001-2007 Assistant Professor of Graphic Design; Belmont University. Taught in an art department to primarily design majors but developed a course to work with non-majors. Taught all levels of graphic design and created a strong portfolio course.
