About Katie

I’ve been working as qualified teaching assistant for one year, whilst working as freelance tutor. I’ve taught two students who have diagnosed dyslexia which makes, reading and spelling hard.

Use of programs such as Toe-by-toe and Sounds Writes can help build up phonic awareness and thus improve spelling. I like to come up with games that can help students practice spelling in a fun way using hands on approach. Making learning fun can help foster engagement.

Best moments I’ve had teaching English in 2025 include : a student with ADHD, poor working memory and dyslexia explain that he now understands how to use speech marks and commands.

I also helped another student with dyslexia improve in spelling, moving from grade 1 level to grade 4 level in a year.

About the lesson

I will provide one-on-one support for the student to gain confidence in reading(phonetics and blending) writing, punctuation, grammar, spelling, text features and structures, different writing styles and persuasive writing.

I believe that confidence is the key to learning success.

When I first meet the child, I will attempt to get to know them and develop a positive relationship, whilst gently entering the lesson in a manner that is comfortable. Once I get to know the child, I can tailor lessons to help support building confidence in required areas.

My 9yo son was apprehensive about getting a tutor and was really not interested, but Katie was engaging and grabbed his attention as soon as she arrived. His attitude towards literacy has changed and as soon as she left he asked when she was coming back - he couldn't wait another week.
