About Matthew
I am a violinist/violist, educator, and Harvard graduate offering private violin and viola instruction for a limited number of motivated students in the San Francisco Bay Area.
As a four-time member of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States, I performed in many of the world’s leading concert halls across North America, Europe, Asia, and South America under conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Antonio Pappano, and Marin Alsop. Throughout my training, I was coached by distinguished musicians from major American orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony.
In addition to my performance experience, I have taught violin and viola for 10+ years, coaching dozens of students through private instruction. As Co-Founder and Board Advisor of a national music education nonprofit, I have helped provide instruction and mentorship to thousands of young musicians across the United States.
Outside of music, I graduated from Harvard University and currently work as a strategy consultant serving nonprofits, philanthropies, and impact investors
I bring this broader background in education, mentorship, and leadership development into my teaching, helping students grow not only as musicians, but also as thoughtful, confident, and ambitious young people.

My Approach
Because every student develops differently, the first several lessons focus on understanding each musician’s current strengths, technical foundations, artistic interests, and long-term goals.
Together, we identify areas for growth and create an individualized course of study that may include:
-Sound production and tone development
-Technical foundations
-Repertoire selection
-Musicianship and interpretation
-Audition preparation
-Youth orchestra coaching
-Practice strategy and habit development
-Performance preparation
My goal is not simply to prepare students for the next lesson or performance, but to support meaningful growth over the months and years ahead.
Who I Work With
My studio is designed primarily for intermediate and advanced students who are eager to challenge themselves and engage deeply with music.
I am particularly excited to work with:
-Middle and high school students
-Youth orchestra musicians
-Students preparing for auditions, competitions, and summer programs
-Violinists and violists seeking individualized mentorship and artistic growth
-Curious, hardworking students who are excited to grow through consistent practice
Because I maintain a small studio, I prioritize students who are motivated, coachable, and genuinely invested in their musical development.
Lesson Format
To allow for meaningful technical, musical, and artistic growth, I offer 60-minute lessons only.
I currently work primarily with students who have established musical foundations and prior playing experience.
Lessons are offered in students’ homes throughout San Francisco.
Availability
I maintain a small, selective studio and accept only a limited number of students each year.
Limited openings available.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
As a Suzuki violin teacher of more than 20 years, I have high standards when it comes to music education. Matthew worked with my daughter, Juliette, on her All-State etudes and brought both expertise and enthusiasm to every lesson.
He quickly identified areas for improvement, communicated concepts clearly, and helped her grow in both confidence and musicianship. I would gladly recommend him to any student seeking high-quality violin or viola instruction.View more recommendations
