My name is Andrea Rivera. I am currently living in Ohio but I was born and raised in Puerto Rico where I acquired a Bachelor's degree in Education (Special Education) and 7 years of experience in the world of tutoring (Math and Spanish to 6th and 7th graders). I describe myself as a passionate, responsible, and empathic teacher who always listens carefully and prioritizes my students' needs to achieve a successful learning experience. Therefore, I can assure you that if you pick me as your tutor you will have a memorable and life-changing learning experience. I specialize in teaching children and special ed students how to read, write, and comprehend Spanish language. However, I can also teach adolescents and adults interested in learning Spanish as a second language. As a teacher, I take the time to learn your goals, strengths, learning style (kinesthetic, visual, or audio learner), and interests in our first class to create lessons that better support your learning needs. I believe it is important to take this step to avoid monotonous and boring lessons. After knowing a little bit about you, I usually plan my lessons like this:
1. Answering the question of the day (to elicit conversation and vocabulary) and/or reviewing the previous lesson.
2. Instruction part (teaching the new topic using your learning style, e.g. videos, pictures, stories, movement)
3. Practice time (with virtual games)
4. Review what we learned and answer any remaining questions
Even though this is what I usually do, I like to create lessons that better serve you and your attention span (we can talk about this a little bit more in your first class).
In terms of my teaching style, I use collaborative, hands-on, and active teaching. I will include you in the teaching process through questions and interactive activities to make sure you understand the new concepts. I use a lot of games, art, dance, singing, and crafting to practice the teaching topic. I am a true believer that eliciting positive emotions while learning can produce long-term memory, which is the key to a successful learning experience. As you see, individualizing my lessons to your learning style and interest is who I am as a teacher, and what I can guarantee you sets me apart from other tutors with teaching experience.
