About Liam

I have a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in the biological sciences from Florida International University (FIU), and I am actively pursuing my career in high school education. While attending FIU, I established my educational background in the biological sciences as well as other natural sciences, and it is a passion of mine breaking down initially complicated subjects and making them simpler to comprehend. I am aware that many learners learn at different paces, so I adjust my tutoring style according to their comprehension and learning needs, whether it be breaking down a tough topic studying for an exam, test, or quiz, or simply desire to improve one's understanding. I am ready and willing to sit down with learners and go over each step to help them achieve their goals. My personal goal is to foster a setting where learners can freely ask any curiosities they may have in regards to the learning material and are not discouraged from being honest about what is not immediately understood. Another goal is to ensure that learners do not simply memorize the correct answers but rather, have a comprehensive understanding regarding the proper explanations of the concepts. I cannot wait to help learners see that science is a subject that can be fulfilling and understood.

About the lesson

As a tutor, my approach aims toward an individualized lesson plan, honing in on ensuring the learner truly comprehends the learning material as opposed to simply memorizing the learning material. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, so I have experience learning about subjects pertaining to a wide variety of topics within the biological sciences as well as other related fields, such as chemistry and mathematics. When tutoring, I evaluate what the learner is already familiar with and figure out which parts are giving them trouble. Next, I take more complicated ideas and subjects and then go over each part, one by one, breaking it down utilizing concise explanations, diagrams, graphs, tables, and examples, especially those that pertain to real life. I tell learners not to be afraid to ask any questions and enable them to solve problems using their skills in critical thinking. As the lesson goes on, I ask questions to the student to determine how well they are understanding the learning material. If I see that the learner can convey an accurate understanding of the topic of interest, then I can have certainty that they are genuinely comprehending what is being taught to them as opposed to blind memorization.

A typical lesson plan would start with a concise overview of the learning material discussed previously, and this conversation would include the learner's goals in the concept(s) they are struggling with. I would follow up with an intro of the primary subject, going over each part, and enable their understanding through the utilization of clear examples. Afterwards, the learner would go over practice problems and questions with guidance, and, as their comprehension grows, I allow for more independent learning. I would complete the tutoring session by going over the major topics discussed about the subject, taking note of any parts that require review in the future, and recommending learning material to look over before the next learning session.

My education in biology has empowered me with the ability to teach science as an integrated topic as opposed to a bullet list of statements. I have a great passion for teaching about various processes within the biological sciences, and instilling learners with the confidence they need to grasp the subjects they are learning. I am quite patient, and I have no problems with going over the same concept(s) multiple times utilizing different methods and phrasing. My primary concern is that the learner becomes capable of comprehending the learning material. I have a deep interest in developing an understanding of the learners' method of thinking.

I am mostly interested in tutoring high school and middle school students that are taking biology, chemistry, or most other general/natural science courses. I am open to teaching mathematical subjects as well, such as geometry, trigonometry, algebra, pre-algebra, pre-calculus, calculus I, and calculus II. I would be delighted to assist learners having trouble with benchmark topics, homework assignments, and studying for exams, quizzes, and tests. With every tutoring session, my aim is not just for learners to check off requirements for their schooling but for them to have a concise comprehension of the concept(s) and bolster their confidence in their capabilities in learning independently.
