About Will
My name is William Dobbs,
I have graduated from the Manchester School of Art with a first class Degree in Illustration with Animation and a Masters of Illustration and Print with a Distinction. I have since been searching for a job that aligns with my career goals and which will provide me with an opportunity to inspire the next generation of avid draughtsmen and print makers.
In terms of my own artistic lineage, my work is a synthesis of traditional drawing and print-making methodologies.
The images that I create draw inspiration from memories, moments, and places that have left a lasting impact on me. I've been shaped by my experiences through adventure, martial arts, conflict, and exploration. I'm fascinated by; the unusual, contested territories, nature, history and natural history, film and life drawing – all of which influence my work. My creative output is inextricably inspired by the legacy of Czech and Polish poster artists from the 1970s, who masterfully demonstrated the power of haptic traditions of mark-making and printmaking. Artists such as Zdenek Burian and Andrzej Klimowski, who when tasked to create film and theatre posters using only the title of the film and using minimal resources due to communist regimes - were able to generate canonical pieces of artwork, showcasing ingenuity and idiosyncratic prowess.
At the heart of my creative process is a passion for mark making. Since writing a contextual practice essay at Uni regarding the importance of neo-lithic cave paintings, considering them to be the earliest and truest form of human expression; I believe the inherently human act of drawing is the most crucial, underpinning element of any successful piece, and I imbue all my work with a focus on drawing.
At University, I am incredibly proud of how I managed to push the boundaries of print; from creating ambitious and meticulously detailed A1 sized lino battle prints, taking 7 months to produce and suites of cmyk UFO-sighting monoprints to creating my own screen printing rig for at-home printing - when I had to adapt to lock-down protocols and power through a time of fear and uncertainty with no access to the art school facilities. These experiences have provided me with a comprehensive technical fluency in planographic, relief and intaglio processes, with a focus on lino and screenprint.
I have had first hand experience teaching printmaking through my time at The Manchester School of Art - tutoring illustration degree students and MA students. During My MA in year 1, I was chosen to work as a Graduate Illustration lecturer, where I was brought in to lectures as a print specialist. I took groups of students down to the print room each week and shared my knowledge and expertise, showing them all the tricks of the trade; from using your lips to sense the appropriate dampness of intaglio paper after you take it out of the water bath to using a paper overlay rubbing on a lino block to see the final image without using any ink. - During these sessions I relished the memories of seeing first hand, their excitement - that instance of nerve-racking fear and eagerness to see the print as you help them crank their plates and blocks through a press. It is an immense feeling that I hope to share with future generations of students and inspire them with traditional print. In 2025 I was personally invited back to the Art School by Dr John Walsh after graduating from my MA, to tutor groups of MA students on their ‘Testing Time’ Unit on drawing and print. I shared images of my print work and discussed some of my favourite artists that imbue their work with print; such as Gauguin’s Noa Noa woodblock series.

Philosophy & Approach
My teaching philosophy centres on the joy of idiosyncratic mark-making. I cultivate an approachable, high-energy environment where experimentation is prioritised over perfection. By focusing on the physical act of making, I help students break through creative blocks and discover the inherent value in their unique visual language.
Experience & Expertise
I bring a rigorous technical background in drawing and printmaking, backed by six years of university education and two years of professional freelance practice. My pedagogical experience includes:
Higher Education: Guest lecturing for BA (Hons) and MA Illustration students at the Manchester School of Art.
Versatility: Capable of tailoring sessions for students ranging from GCSE level to Postgraduate study.
Lesson Structure & Outcomes
Each one-hour session is designed to be prolific and intensive. We will focus on:
Rapid Iteration: Producing a high volume of "fast" drawings to build confidence and momentum.
Technical & Contextual Guidance: Integrating my expansive knowledge of artist references and print techniques to provide bespoke research paths for each student.
Portfolio Building: At the conclusion of every session, students will have generated a tangible body of work that reflects their evolving personal practice.
