About Anthony
I have university and secondary level teaching experience, both in South Korea and in the US. In the US, I taught English Language Arts and American History to eighth graders in Albany, Oregon. In Busan, South Korea, I taught English as a foreign language to middle school students in classes of up to 50 students. I taught college prep classes to high school students, including SAT, TOEFL, and English composition. During my first year in Korea, I taught elementary school children from ages 6 to 11 at an English institution, with classes up to 20. I have also tutored one-on-one and small groups of three to five students, from adults to children.

I teach using a constructivist, collaborative approach. I enjoy creating learning activities that challenge students to apply as many cognitive skills as possible and to integrate different learning disciplines in problem solving. One way of doing this is by creating simulations whenever possible. For example, I once created a task for a group of middle-school students to take a specific era of American history, focus on a specific area, and to create a mural that depicted this era. Students in the group had to draw on the mural, label it, and divide it into timelines. For instance, a group chose the period from American Reconstruction until 1900, and they focused on technological change. Once they had researched, then created their mural, the group had to do a presentation on their mural, contextually explaining each period of the timeline, describing the items they had drawn on the mural that represented technological change and how these changes impacted society and led to other changes.

To whom it may concern:
Anthony and I have been colleagues at Ewha Womans University for over a decade. I can provide both a professional and character recommendation. In terms of teaching, advising, and required duties in our department – which includes both mandatory freshmen courses of integrated English composition, presentation, reading skills, and upper-level subject-matter electives – I can attest to Anthony’s professionalism and dedication to teaching. Over the past 14 years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Anthony on curriculum design, exam development, textbook selection, and other departmental tasks. During this time, Anthony has proven to be a valuable member of our faculty, as well as a respected and effective leader when given leadership roles.
I was particularly impressed with his management of our Advanced English courses in which as the longest serving chair, he revamped the curriculum from a general content-based approach that relied heavily on memorization and rote learning to an integrated reading, writing, and speaking skills approach with an emphasis on the application of critical thinking skills. Although he faced a lot of resistance to implement this change, it is now the standard in our freshmen level-based courses.
In terms of character, I have found Anthony to be a well-liked colleague and a team player among our group of foreign and Korean faculty. Anthony is also an outspoken advocate for ethical and professional behavior and has led by example in this regard. I have personally sought him out as a sounding board on several occasions as have other colleagues, who view him as standfast, practical, and honest. I believe that Anthony Davis would be an asset to your department and will be sorely missed in ours.
I recommend Anthony Davis to you without reservations. Should you require any further information, feel free to contact me at the email or by phone number listed below.
