Here is how I would teach one of my students with autism.
Lesson Topic: Understanding Fractions
Objective:
Students will be able to identify and represent fractions using visual aids and manipulatives.
Materials:
Fraction circles or bars
Paper plates (to create visual fractions)
Markers
Worksheets with fraction problems
Lesson Outline:
1. I Do (Direct Instruction):
Introduction: Start by explaining what a fraction is. Use simple language and visual aids. Show a fraction circle and say, "This is a whole. When we divide it into parts, we get fractions."
Demonstration: Take a fraction circle and show 1/2. Point to the circle, saying, “This represents one part out of two equal parts.”
Visual Example: Draw a simple diagram on the board, showing a pizza divided into 4 equal slices. Label each slice (1/4).
2. We Do (Guided Practice):
Hands-On Activity: Distribute fraction circles to students. Guide them to create 1/2 and 1/4 fractions using the circles.
Group Discussion: Ask questions like, “How many parts do we have?” and “What fraction does this part represent?” Encourage students to share their thoughts.
Practice Together: Use paper plates to create fractions. Guide students to color 1/3 of the plate while the rest remains uncolored. Discuss their results as a group.
3. You Do (Independent Practice):
Worksheet Activity: Hand out worksheets with various fractions represented visually. Students will identify and write down the fraction for each visual.
Individual Creation: Ask students to create their own fraction using a paper plate and markers, then share it with a partner or the class, explaining their fraction.
Conclusion:
Recap: Summarize what fractions are and the importance of parts of a whole. Reinforce vocabulary.
Assessment: Observe students during the "You Do" portion to assess understanding and provide support as needed.
