About Joshua

Joshua Nakazawa began his journey as a cellist at age 4 learning from the Suzuki method at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. He continued his studies throughout his early education at the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and the New England Conservatory pre-college programs.
After his classical training, gaining degrees at Manhattan School of Music and Southern Methodist University, Josh set on a musical path that continued to lead him around the globe. Josh has performed solo, chamber and orchestral music at the Banff Music Festival in Canada, the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, the Spoleto Music Festival in South Carolina, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. In addition to his current tenured full-time position with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, he also plays as a regular guest musician with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.
In tandem with his musical career, throughout his life, Joshua has maintained an athletic lifestyle playing lacrosse, ice hockey, snowboarding, hiking, paddle boarding and freediving.
Joshua is a longtime supporter of community music outreach education and is always looking for fun and creative ways to tie culture, passion, people, and music together.

MY TEACHER STORY:
Before winning a tenured position with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra I was teaching a lot as a licensed teacher in the Massachusetts public school system, and had a private cello studio with over 30 students. I always loved teaching, but something inside me felt wrong. I felt that unless I earned a professional performance job to prove my validity as a cellist, that my methods would never be worthy enough for my students. After all I had earned performance degrees from Manhattan School of Music, Southern Methodist University, and the Royal Conservatory of Music. I became determined to win a job with an orchestra, so after finishing my studies, every day for two years I taught classes in the Newton public schools to 4th, 7th and 8th graders, then taught 30+ students weekly private lessons, then practiced to win an audition from 7:30pm-11:30pm. I was paying my own flight plus my cello's flight to take auditions, and while advancing in a few, I was never able to close the deal. l was getting overwhelmingly discouraged until I read a life changing book about audition preparation that was actually popular among professional athletes training to win competitions. It uses the idea that performance success comes from focusing on statistical consistency within one's preparation. After applying these specific methods to my practice, I began winning auditions and competitions almost immediately. When I applied these same methods to my students the results were incredible, and I finally felt that my own methods were worthy of teaching. I constructed 4 month online video series that gives daily daily instruction and applies one key goal at a time making learning the cello fun and easy. Each lesson is filmed in a new and interesting location in Hawaii keeping each lesson fresh. With the option of having access to my program in tandem with online live lessons, I hope that you will find studying cello with with me in Hawaii a rewarding and refreshing experience.
