About Hannah
My interest in medical Spanish grew directly from early volunteer work at a community clinic, where language gaps sometimes left patients quietly confused or afraid. That firsthand experience showed me how much clear, simple communication genuinely matters in healthcare settings specifically. Formal study afterward sharpened both my Spanish and my understanding of medical context together. That combined background now shapes how seriously and practically I approach teaching healthcare-focused Spanish.
Working with nursing students alongside adults switching into healthcare careers means treating every lesson as genuinely consequential, not just academic practice. I never simplify away necessary precision, since real patients depend on clear, accurate communication in genuinely important moments. What I find most rewarding is watching a nursing student confidently walk a patient through instructions entirely in Spanish without hesitation. That real-world readiness reflects exactly why I continue focusing on this specific kind of teaching.
I stay closely engaged with medical Spanish through ongoing volunteer work and ongoing conversations within healthcare settings. This keeps my teaching genuinely grounded in real clinical situations rather than theoretical classroom material. Career-switching adults entering healthcare fields share that same urgency, often needing functional vocabulary within a tight, practical timeframe. Medical terminology gets introduced steadily, paired always with plain language explanations that patients themselves would actually understand. Role play scenarios begin early, simulating patient intake, symptom description and basic instructions given calmly and clearly.
As confidence builds, students practice explaining procedures, asking about symptoms and delivering instructions using appropriately simple, reassuring language. Nursing students often need to switch quickly between clinical accuracy and warm, accessible tone, so both get practiced together deliberately. Career switchers instead focus more on building a solid working vocabulary quickly, prioritizing the phrases they'll use most often on the job. Listening exercises stay grounded in realistic patient interactions, since real speech rarely matches textbook clarity in a busy clinical setting.
I remind students constantly that clear, calm communication matters more here than flawless, complicated grammar ever could. Practicing under simulated pressure genuinely prepares students better than passive vocabulary memorization alone. Scenarios stay closely tied to real healthcare situations a student expects to actually face. My focus throughout remains practical, helping students communicate with genuine confidence when patients need it most.
