About Rachel
I have taken private lessons for 4 years and participated in a variety of orchestras, including the Anchorage Alaska Junior Youth Symphony, the Vancouver Honors Orchestra and the Skyview High School Chamber Orchestra. As part of the Skyview Chamber Orchestra, I went to Anaheim, California to participate in the World Strides Heritage Competition, where my orchestra won first place. Additionally, at Skyview I assisted the teacher with concert orchestra, teaching two of her beginners privately for six months until they were able to join the class and acted as a substitute when she was unavailable. I expanded upon these skills by assisting the beginner orchestra teacher at Alki Middle School, helping her students with posture and technique during class and occasionally filling in for the teacher. I have experience teaching beginners in and outside the classroom, allowing me to teach you privately and assist with orchestra pieces. Whether you are starting an instrument in school or deciding to take one up on your own, I am excited to help you develop your skills and pass on my experience in these areas!

My lessons are achievement-oriented and perfect for beginners or students between the grades of 5 and 7. Additionally, lessons are self-paced and follow the learning speed of the student. As lessons start, we will learn the basics of how to hold you instrument and bow, how they work, and how to care for them. As you progress, we will start having a more structured approach. Each lesson will include a scale and a piece of music to practice, slowly building basic skills in how to use the instrument. If you have audition music or orchestra music to learn, bring it along and we will work on it together. We will play together while learning, and have the occasional showcase day where you play a finished piece for me and celebrate your progress!
