I have a Master of Music degree from The University of Tennessee in Piano Pedagogy (the art of teaching). I am also a cellist and play in several orchestras. I choose materials for each student based on their musical background and desires. I use various method books including Faber and Faber, Alfred, and Suzuki. Teaching is really leading so I often ask students questions to lead them to discover the answers for themselves. Music is universal in appeal and I like to tailor lessons to fit the desired goal of the student. I prefer to give each student a background in classical because it lays the foundation for every other genre of music they may prefer to play. We explore pops, jazz, Broadway, etc. from a solid foundation in the basics of music and music theory as well as an introduction to the classics.
I have been teaching students from age 4 through college for 4 decades. It never grows old because each student brings a new challenge. Through the years I have averaged 30 students. Some have gone on to win major competitions, graduate in music from accredited universities, including Yale. Those who choose music in college always pass the entry-level theory test so they can immediately advance to Theory I instead of taking an introductory theory course first. I have taught class piano in 3 universities in Tennessee as well as giving private instruction in these schools as well.
Students in the beginning and elementary level take half-hour lessons at $20 a lesson. Those entering their fourth year of study and beyond must take 45 min. lessons at a $30 rate.
Sharon is the BEST Piano teacher. My son has lessons once a week and continues to improve each year. She is great at knowing how to encourage, communicate and demonstrate skills that help him to excel. She is a great person and role model for him as well has a teacher. I would highly recommend her as a piano or music teacher.
