About Tom
I have two years informal experience tutoring my younger sister A-Level History and English during the pandemic. Having developed a passion for teaching during this period, I have since become a regular tutor for an academic centre based in Kingston.
I also have many years experience teaching beginner guitar lessons and gymnastics classes in the past.

I want to pass on my enthusiasm and knowledge for History and English to A Level or GCSE students. I believe that learning about our world, either through events and people in history or in the world of great authors, is extremely beneficial to us all and can be fun and rewarding if approached with the right methods. This will be especially vital in the 2021/22 year, which will be uniquely challenging with exams restarting as usual after two years of being cancelled, as well as many missed months of vital learning time.
I received A* in both English Literature and History at A Level and an A in Music, and have just graduated with a High First Class Degree with Honours in BA History from The University of Exeter, also receiving a Dean's Commendation which recognised a mark of 90% in my dissertation. I am now studying at the London School of Economics and Political Science to study Colonial History.
My most useful skill is essay writing skills, as I am very attentive to style, vocabulary, and structure. Whereas other tutors focus too heavily on abstractly cramming information, I prefer to show how this knowledge can be practically applied in exam situations. As my academic background is largely historical, I place particular emphasis on context when for English, and close reading of the language of historical sources for History. I read a book a week (mostly fiction), have a very good knowledge of English, American, and world literatures, as well as all aspects of History (but British Empire and European colonialism is my favourite!).
Typical lessons are 1 hour once a week. I am very happy to be flexible around this, feel free to suggest timings that would work for you. My availability is most weekday evenings due to university commitments, but again I can be flexible. I hope to hear back from you!
