About Mark

I have 20 years of experience teaching and I'm registered with the Ontario College of Teachers in Canada ( OCT#542224). I have taught in a wide variety of settings from elite private schools to state schools to special needs schools. In each of those, I have found a way to relate the materials successfully to the individuals and find the particular roadblock that was stopping them from moving forward.

About the lesson

I excel at getting to the heart of the problem and finding a way to relate the material to the students in a way that is accessible and straightforward. Put simply, I put a student at their ease and ask them to talk me through how they understand the problem and solution. With this, I can usually pinpoint the misconceptions and gaps that have caused problems. Next I look to connect the maths as much as possible to prior knowledge so that the new learning is firmly connected in the students mind to what they already know. Finally I look for practical applications of the maths, especially those the student might relate to. This aims to help make the maths memorable in a way that the student can recall and derive themselves.
In particular, I've had a lot of success sorting out the foundational skills that high school math students need, such as the algebra that perhaps they didn't quite grasp properly in grade 9 and that has hampered them ever since.
