About Kevin
I have always be curious and ambitious to learn and succeed. I achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Maths from Manchester University at 21 years of age. I went on to do an Actuarial Diploma for a highly regarded insurance company with the intention of working as a financial advisor in the city. My interests however expanded so later I returned to University and achieved another First Class Degree in Philosophy. I went on to study 7 different languages (I have a good working knowledge of Spanish, French, Italian and German).
I have taught Maths for over 15 years both in the UK and abroad, to students 11-18 years of age. During that time I have prepared students for a diversity of exams including the 11+, Entrance Exam, GCSE, AS, A Level, and all levels of the IB. I see Maths as a language and as with all languages it is not just a matter of learning a set of rules and vocabulary and then regurgitating them. For a language to come alive it needs to be learnt in the context of the world we live in; the tools and skills develop by personalising it through our every day use of the language. We come to appreciate its beauty and power of a language as we experience it as an extension of ourselves. I pride myself on seeing my students grow into confident problem-solvers, demonstrating it in achieving high grades in Maths just as I have done in my own academic career. I believe there are no short cuts to success and for that reason I put a lot of work into the preparation of lessons and I expect my students to show the same seriousness of mind if they want to be ‘good at Maths'.
