About Neil

I am a classically trained pianist with a very eclectic background in the field. I completed my studies majoring in music at Monash University. I have taught piano for the past 15 years at all levels (beginners up to licentiate VCE students).

About the lesson

My teaching method is dependent on the requirements of the student whilst always encouraging students to have a broader appreciation of music. Students who wish to learn through the AMEB syllabus I place a heavy emphasis on technical work, articulation, sight reading, theory and aural training (harmony, interval recognition etc). A student who wants to accompany themselves or others singing would benefit from a bigger focus on chord theory (inversions, smooth voice leading etc) but with technical foundations (scales, arpeggios etc) still heavily emphasized. I always include ear training in every lesson and encourage daily sight reading exercises.

Perfect! I’m one of those people returning to the piano after a very long break. I learned piano for a few years back in primary school and I wasn’t sure where to begin again, but Neil seems to know exactly what I need. I completely agree with all of the other reviewers. Neil is a really nice person and a terrific piano teacher! He teaches a range of styles and techniques, and he’s very encouraging while also challenging me to progress beyond what I think I can do. After 6 weeks of lessons, I'm loving my return to the piano, and I feel lucky to have found such a gem!

Perfect! Neil comes across a very cheerful and enthusiastic teacher, who is not only passionate about music, but also showed genuine interest in my child's learning interests and style. Neil built an instant rapport with my child, she felt at ease to learn with Neil and inspired by the way Neil played piano. She is ready to take her piano lessons with Neil after the festive season. Neil was my piano teacher for 8 years, and he prepared me for my AMEB practical exams from Grade 3 to Grade 8. He also taught me how to improvise my own melodies and play pop songs based on chords, which helped me stay engaged, especially when exams felt burdensome.
During that time, Neil was always passionate and enthusiastic and motivated me to work hard and stay focused. I’m very grateful for this, as I still have the skills and technique to play any style of piece now that I’m an adult.

Neil taught our daughter from ages 7 to 18, which says something in itself. We found that he knew his music but was also an excellent teacher. Our daughter learned how to play music, not just how to hit the right notes. Neil was friendly and flexible and always treated our daughter with respect. With regard to the music teaching, he knew how to catch his student's interest but could also be firm enough to get the best effort from her. Our daughter went on to study science, but her ongoing love of music is thanks to teachers like Neil.
