  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in Psychology pre-dates the commencement of my career in Psychology. Interests in related fields like Biology and Evolution, and life experiences, some that we all experience and others more idiosyncratic e.g. 'Jury Service', fanned the flames of a pre-existing fascination with the topic. Being retired from full time lecturing is great in that it frees me from the more tiresome aspects of lecturing e.g. committees and meetings, giving more time to devote to the subject matter itself. With private tutoring there are no tedious meetings and committees and I can do what I like best, tutoring.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise more so in topics such as Biological Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Animal Cognition, Cyberpsychology and Quantitative methods, subfields within the discipline that I have always had a passion for, however, I have over recent years become more interested in Qualitative methodologies, hypnotherapy (I am now fully qualified), and fields of study often regarded as being antithetical to the more science leaning areas of Psychology. In short, I enjoy discussing any topic with my students pertaining to Psychology.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was fortunate enough, as an undergrad, to make the acquaintance of Dr Lance Workman. He had an enormous influence on my interest and subsequent career in Psychology, in particular my passion for Evolutionary Psychology. Lance introduced me to a number of academics who, to this day, I regard as my heroes.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The obvious qualities required to be a good tutor are commitment, perseverance, and patience. However, the ability to motivate, inspire, and to possess an intrinsic desire to generate enthusiasm for the topic in question are paramount.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Perhaps 10 years into my lectureship I was approached by a student after a 3rd year lecture on Evolutionary Psychology. The student in question reached out and shook my hand and said that for almost three years, and all of his years in education prior to University, he had simply gone through the motions of attending classes and lectures but this was the very first time that he had truly enjoyed and been inspired by a lesson. This revelation was, to put it mildly, extremely rewarding.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

As I am now retired from lecturing I no longer experience any of the less rewarding aspects of the role. I thoroughly enjoy personal tuition. There are no negatives.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

As intimated above, I find the process of inspiring and motivating students highly rewarding in any topic within Psychology. However, as is the case with any career I do have more specific passions such as Evolutionary and Biological Psychology. I also have a fascination with the natural world and animal intelligence.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I believe I possess a number of important traits incumbent on someone that has earned the title of 'Superprof'. These are; the ability to motivate, engage with, and inspire, and, perhaps most important of all, an ability to help students reach their full academic potential.
