About Mathilde

I have always loved learning, but more importantly, I love helping other people feel confident in their ability to learn. As someone who studied both History and Economics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and is now completing my MA in History at University College London, I understand how overwhelming academics can sometimes feel. I know what it is like to struggle with difficult material, doubt yourself, and feel pressure to succeed — which is why I approach tutoring with patience, encouragement, and empathy.
My academic journey has allowed me to develop strong skills in research, writing, analysis, and communication, but it has also taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance. I have experience working with students across many different ages and learning styles, from elementary school students building foundational skills to university students working on advanced essays and research projects. In addition to history and economics, I also tutor literature, essay writing, and creative writing because storytelling, critical thinking, and communication have always been passions of mine.
What makes me different as a tutor is that I genuinely care about helping students grow in confidence, not just improve grades. I try to create lessons that feel engaging, collaborative, and personalized rather than intimidating or overly rigid. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and developing their own ideas. I especially enjoy helping students improve their writing, organize their thoughts, and learn how to think critically rather than simply memorize information.

I believe the best learning happens when students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in conversation, rather than simply memorizing information. My teaching style is highly adaptable and discussion-based, focused on helping students truly understand concepts while also building confidence in their own ideas and abilities. Because of my interdisciplinary background in both history and economics, I help students connect larger themes, think critically, and improve not only their subject knowledge but also their analytical and writing skills.
My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual goals and learning style. For younger students, I focus on making lessons engaging, interactive, and approachable. For middle school, high school, and university students, I emphasize deeper analysis, essay structure, source interpretation, study techniques, and exam preparation. I also provide support with research papers, dissertations, creative writing, literature analysis, and academic writing more broadly.
A typical lesson usually begins with identifying what the student is currently struggling with or hoping to improve. From there, we work through concepts together using examples, guided discussion, practice questions, close reading, or writing exercises. I like to break difficult ideas into manageable steps while encouraging students to think independently and develop their own interpretations. I also often incorporate real-world examples and historical context to make material more engaging and easier to remember.
