About Joshua

I am a mixed-race person (Asian and white), if that matters to you, but I am a native speaker of English and a heritage learner of Spanish and Irish. I am currently an upper division undergraduate student of history, modern languages, and literature. I love to cook and to read about Irish history!

I care about English learners, and I will do my best to ensure they succeed and will advance to a higher level of English instruction. The textbooks we will use are the English For Everyone series. During the free lesson, I will determine what level you are at according to the CEFR. This is so you can purchase the course book and the practice book of the appropriate level: Beginner 1, Beginner 2, Intermediate, and Advanced. I highly recommend that you purchase the boxed set of textbooks, and the English for Everyone Dictionary as well.

I can work with Spanish, French, Dutch, and Tagalog speaking learners, as I do have a working, basic knowledge of those languages. However, I am not limited to speakers of those languages and I can work with anyone.

I do hope you choose me as your tutor! I will make learning English as easy as possible.

About the lesson

My lessons are for ESL students or for those who wish to develop their conversational skills in English. With every lesson I will ask you simple questions in English to develop your confidence in the language. We will practise speaking about topics of polite conversation and utilise appropriate etiquette. I will also assign short, simple readings to discuss. Finally, I will give short lessons on English grammar, taking note of the mistakes that were made during the session. If desired, I can give short lessons on British, Commonwealth, and American culture and history.

I do not teach accent reduction, but I will help you so that you are clearly understood by native speakers, heritage speakers, or advanced non-native speakers of English.

Although I speak with a Canadian accent, I will use British spelling and grammar conventions in my lessons as British spelling is more universal. However, I will also familarise the student with American English and other varieties of English. Whether you travel to the Australian outback, sip rooibos in Cape Town, shop in Hong Kong, or visit the Taj Mahal, I hope to inspire you to travel the world and to speak English often wherever you may go!
