About Isabelle
I have tutoring experience through a coronavirus initiative and have been offering informal advice over Oxbridge admissions as well as through formal roles in access and outreach for two years.
My degree offers specialism in the following areas: the making of modern America since 1863; literature and politics in early modern England; union and devolution in the UK since 1603; the revolutions of 1989; as well as insight into space, place and environmental history; the history of slavery and serfdom; the lens of family, marriage and the household; and finally, postcolonialism and the state as a part of my 'Disciplines of History' paper. The Disciplines of History paper as well as the Approaches to History paper taught at Prelims (first year) are particularly relevant to understanding aspects of the HAT exam as they provide a lens to assess any period of History- this is often what is perceived as the 'overwhelming' or unfamiliar aspect of the entrance exam.
Alongside this I am comfortable with British History 1500-1700; varied topics in European and World History from 370-900; 'Theories of State' including Marx, Aristotle, Rousseau and Hobbes; German History from 1871-1991; Russian history through the lens of war and authoritarianism; as well as the position of the Church in England from 1515-1603.
Even though a shared knowledge of your period would provide notable benefits to our sessions, focusing on skillset will take greater priority so don't worry if it looks like I haven't covered your interests before!

History is not just a discipline requiring a retention of knowledge but one that requires a perfected skillset of analysis and passion. All classes will be virtual and follow a structured programme combining practical exam preparation and discussion to ensure a variety of source and essay skills are covered and expanded. I model my sessions to challenge students in a fun and engaging manner with a similar format to Oxbridge classes and tutorials. To get the most out of our sessions students will be expected to carry out class preparation and engage in discussion.
Before tutoring commences we will assess the level the tutee is currently at along with what they want to achieve through the course of their sessions. Alongside outlining aims and objectives in line with their specification, I aim to move beyond simple consolidation of knowledge to a comfortable position of application and expansion. I believe a good historian is shown as much through their progression as written communicators as it is shown through their verbal reasoning skills. Our sessions will therefore look at exam style questions both within a traditional exam setting as well as a class discussion format. Whilst I will offer presentations on content the main focus of my tutoring style is on the application of knowledge.
I prefer HAT exam preparation classes to be run on a timetable though one off sessions are available.
