About Mariella
I have recently graduated from University College London (UCL) to obtaining a Distinction in Early Modern Studies Masters, which is an interdisciplinary in the study of the period from 1450 to 1750. I specialise in Tudor History, Manuscript studies, palaeography and the study of classic dramatists, such as Shakespeare.
I also hold a BA (hons) degree in Drama and Theatre, which included modules in Shakespeare's theatre, the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre tradition and Greek tragedy. I read history widely and am able to tutor across a variety of different time periods.

I format my lessons around the learning of specific topics within an overarching theme. For example, we may study The Tudors as a large theme and within that have lessons on Letter-writing, Royalty, Politics etc. I find that it is important to understand these periods in context with other times, so we would bookend each topic with both an introduction, which would include key dates, key events, and key figures and then finish with a conclusion lesson, which would review everything we have learnt and also go over all the key views of the time period.
My main aim with any tutoring session if to help the student develop their knowledge but also to be able to convey their knowledge coherently through writing. So a full lesson may look something like this:
1. Introduction to the topic
2. Source task (using the 5 key questions)
3. Discussing the context around the source
4. Writing an answer to a question to conclude
5. Reviewing all the information
I want to provide a safe space of communication, to enable students to feel confident and trusted. I want them to use their creativity to approach historical materials and open up their view of specific eras in order to better understand the people living within them. Communication is key in my teaching approach and much of the lesson will be centred around having dialogues around ideas and sources. So that students are confident and comfortable talking about a variety of social, political and economic issues in any given era.
