About Molly

Dear student, my name is Molly Miller. Who am I? I am many things. Born and raised in Colorado, I am a mountain climbing, landscape painting, ultimate frisbee playing kind of woman, but I am also a lover of literature and deep conversation.

In college, I spent hours developing my own reading and writing techniques and taught other students how to ask critical questions, structure their papers, formulate their thesis, and find their voices as writers. I believe that words have power... yes, your words and writing included!

About the lesson

Many students view reading and writing as boring, but literature awakens us to the most important matters of life. .

Literature and writing go hand in hand. Being a good reader is essential to being a good writer. Through the writing process, a student learns to wrestle with the meaning and significance of the literature and apply it to the present.

The basis of my teaching method is simple: to become a better writer, a student must write. To become a better reader, a student must read; to become a deeper thinker, a student must engage in conversation. I will help my students become discerning readers and logical, contemplative writers.

I am willing to work with students in middle school through high school, and I base my teaching around the literature and writing standards appropriate for the student's grade level.

My students will read the appropriate literature for their age, work through daily study questions that incite deeper thinking, and complete an essay at the end of each completed book. Some of our sessions will involve brief lectures on the author and their style, but mainly focus on discussing the literature and why it matters. I will also teach the student how to write thoughtful, organized essays, and later on in the year, we will do "workshops" together- where the student and I will edit their paper, so they can learn to critique their own work.

My passion and joy for this subject sets me apart as tutor. I want to come alongside students and help them build a curious mind and love of storytelling. Together, we will question, discover, and write.
