About Rena
I began studying fiber arts as a child, and over the years have loved the process of achieving proficiency in hand embroidery methods including Jacobean Crewelwork, cross-stitch, surface embroidery, as well as other fiber arts including knitting, crochet, and hand sewing. I am a firm believer that hands-on, in-person, live, one-on-one and tiny group instruction is the best way to learn, and cements skills like nothing else. I am primarily self-taught, but have studied with the Royal School of Needlework. I will work with you until you get it, and I offer a bespoke learning experience.

I have studied Jacobean Crewelwork through the Royal School of Needlework and am—so far as I can tell from the internet—currently the only person in the New York City area offering hands-on instruction in this craft. I believe that there is no substitute for in-person, one-on-one instruction and will sit patiently with you until you get it. I will travel to you within Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. I have been practicing fiber arts for over 30 years. I also teach counted cross stitch—learn to work without a pattern! In addition, I offer beginner instruction in knitting and crochet. My costs include project materials. I can also show you how to sew a button on and how to hem your own clothes.
I am primarily beginner focused. I can teach you embroidery methods and techniques applicable to both surface embroidery and Jacobean Crewelwork that I leaned from RSN. I fell in love with Jacobean Crewelwork on World Embroidery day and was dismayed to find that the US has no equivalent to RSN for learning embroidery, so I taught myself and began taking remote classes. I delight in sharing an ancient craft rich with historical tradition and specificity. I majored in English as Columbia University, where I also studied history and art history, and can offer historical context on the beautiful craft of hand embroidery.
Please note—the 30 minute free session that is the only time that I will do webcam. It will be a primarily informational session to discuss your goals, but I'm happy to demonstrate a few stitches if there's time after we've gone over everything.
My costs include materials—crewel wool, canvas, and proper needles—and travel. I can provide a hoop for the length of the session if you do not have one. I will come to you within Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.
I offer weekday evening (8pm to 11:30pm) and weekend lessons.

I do not teach remotely. My fee reflect that I will travel to you within Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queen. I am happy to use the free 30-minute webcam session (which is the only time that I will do remote) to show examples of my work and to talk about your fiber arts goals and what you would like to achieve. I'm happy to steer you elsewhere if it seems like we aren't a good fit.
