About Phillip
I am primarily concerned with teaching students how to understand texts: what questions to ask of a sentence, paragraph, or chapter. In the process, I concentrate on the way that characterization, point of view, and plot convey a book's ideas. Having discussed the book's structure and meaning, my classes can construct the course's larger themes of society, politics, and culture in black and white American culture. They can construct how American authors have presented the nation through diverse and often conflicting perspectives.

I am an experienced scholar and teacher of American and African American literature who has authored critical books, a memoir about black intellectual boyhood in the era of integration, and an extension bibliography o central black literary texts. I have been able to meet and talk with many of the thinkers and writers who have influenced my thought. And I participated firsthand in the Civil Rights movement and observed the Black student movement as an undergraduate. As a literary critic, I have continued to write about the social, political, and intellectual world in which I came of age. My memoir is indeed a cultural history of that world
