About Alena

My name is Alena Novoseltseva — a linguist, educator, and instructional designer passionate about making language and literature accessible, engaging, and genuinely fun to learn.

I graduated from the Philology program at HSE University in St. Petersburg, and studied Linguistics at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. What sets me apart is my dual expertise as both a trained linguist and a certified educator — through a minor in Teaching Mastery in the Digital Age, I gained hands-on skills in pedagogical design, gamification, and online course development. So I don't just know Russian — I know how to teach it effectively.

I bring 8 years of teaching experience, covering a wide range of school subjects — algebra, geometry, Russian language and literature, and English — for children and teenagers, as well as teaching Russian as a Second Language to adult learners, including through the LangAid volunteer project at Boğaziçi University. I've also served as a teaching assistant at HSE, supporting students in quantitative literary analysis and German.

Every lesson is structured, research-backed, and tailored to you. I use tools like Canva and gamification techniques to keep sessions visual and motivating, whether we're working through verb conjugation or analyzing Tolstoy. I'm punctual, organized, and committed to tracking your progress with regular feedback.

About the lesson

I believe that language is a living system to be experienced. Rather than forcing rote memorization of declension tables, I introduce grammar through meaningful contexts, such as short stories, dialogues, and real-world texts. I use a scaffolding technique: we start with a manageable chunk of new material, practice it actively, and then build upon it layer by layer, ensuring you never feel overwhelmed. For literature, we explore character motivations, historical context, and stylistic devices through guided discussion, treating each text as a window into Russian culture.
