About Kseniya
In the undergraduate courses at University of Zurich, I was the main teacher assistant: I prepared and delivered the homework for students on Linear Algebra and Numerical methods weekly, helped to write and grade exams, and was always accessible to students by email. Showing passion for teaching and being prepared has helped me to run a successful classroom. Through my experiences, preparation seems necessary in the development of any skill. I have learned that time is used more efficiently when teachers are prepared and organized. Students seem to take more information in when it is expressed to them in an organized manner than when it is presented in a random or unstructured manner. A good structure of the lectures is therefore essential. I always start my classes with a repetition of the material of the previous one. Also having a good sense of humor is an added advantage. The students in this classroom feel comfortable and confident in asking questions, they feel free to make mistakes and challenge themselves. I believe that a non-stressful and comfortable atmosphere is conducive to learning. The close cooperation between lecturer and instructor is also essential. If it is possible, I try to interchange ideas with parallel lectures as well.

I wish to help students find their love for mathematics and to begin understanding the process of
scientific thinking. Students need to learn thinking critically. They have to understand how the
solution/material I present to them may be just one appropriate approach to a problem, and evaluate
whether other solutions are also appropriate. Rather than tell the students the solution I have in mind,
I ask them, “Do you have any ideas how to solve it? What should we try first?” We try
something, see how it works, and proceed based on that feedback. If the task is too difficult to test all
at once, we first work on a reduced problem. I would like to see that the students really want to
learn and understand besides just getting good grades, I want to see they care and everyone work
by themselves. It is important that the students think independently about what they have learned.
I think teaching helps me:
• To keep my own knowledge fresh.
• Being immediately useful. I want to have an impact beyond my research.
