About Ayush

I'm an enthusiastic Physics PhD student at Imperial College London (having done my Masters and Bachelors in Physics at Imperial), with a passion for teaching and showing that physics is good fun. I’m here to empower you to drive the results YOU want, and build a strong foundation of conceptual understanding. I teach Physics for IB and A-Level (all boards), and Maths for IB and A-level (all boards).

Having scored in the top 1% of 142,000 students globally in the IB, and successfully demonstrated my high level of Maths and Physics understanding, by working at Goldman Sachs - I can help you build your core intuition on not just solving problems, but fundamentally understanding the subject so your knowledge can be applied in any context.

Teach understanding, not facts. This allows you to be flexible, and consistently answer the tricky questions.

I believe transparency, a clear personalised roadmap for improvement, and close-support with both tutees and parents, paired with years of tutoring experience is the optimal approach to drive results from your learning.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Physics and maths have always been deeply interesting to me - it's almost philosophical in nature really. It's about literally EVERYTHING around you, and yet we give it so little attention,
and somehow it has the stereotype of being dry and boring. This is an issue in the way it's taught so I really took to tutoring to convey my enthusiasm for the field, back in the IB - tutoring younger students and even those in my year.
I continued tutoring throughout university and now during my PhD as well.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Physics at IB, University and A-level, and Maths at A-level. I love to discuss how all the topics are linked. Physics is one subject after all, and if I can bridge concepts together in a way that teach students to think about the underlying mechanics in a question, I have succeeded. This flexibility gives students the tools and independence to tackle new unfamiliar questions with speed and consistency. I love quantum physics and nuclear physics in particular.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes! I can't give enough credit to Stephen Hawking for inspiring me to pursue physics, and that being curious is truly what it's all about. I'd also love to thank Salman Khan from Khan Academy for giving me the tools to learn subjects outside of my syllabus and grow my interest in nature and how to apply mathematics to it.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Results driven, clarity and empathy! A student and tutor need to click, and I need to understand how a student learns and approaches questions. I can then be very clear with the approach we're going to take, to the parents and the students and then we actually get down to business and practice practice practice! All my students have demonstrated great results in their efforts in the form of improved grades and interest in the field.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I actually got to meet Stephen Hawking at University. I arranged for him to come give a talk to the university on his research on Black Holes. This was the year before he passed away, sadly, but I will never forget what it was like to see my childhood hero in person. He single handedly motivated me through middle and high school through his books "The Universe in a Nutshell", and to this day I cherish his contributions.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I thought it was really challenging to wrap my head conceptually around quantum physics. It's so bizarre after all - a completely unintuitive mechanism of the universe. How could a human brain possibly wrap itself around that? So I made sure I studied extra hard, watching relevant Youtube videos, understanding analogies to the point where now I consider it my strongest subject.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion to spread the reaction of wonder, imagination and sheer awe I have to the world and universe around us. So many people live life letting assuming the existence and origins of the world is seemingly 'normal', without truly stopping to think about what it all means. I think pairing my lessons with insights and a sense of appreciation for what we're actually learning goes a long way.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

Truly it's the extra mile I go for my students. I don't just teach people how to answer questions. I teach people how to understand how questions are constructed, how to appreciate the subject and give them the tools to be independent. I understand that to be a truly successful tutor, eventually you need the students to be independent and self-sustaining - and I empower them to do so.
