About Mekumi

Hi! My name is Mekumi and I am currently undertaking a BSc in Biological Sciences at Imperial College London.

Having completed Biology A Level (and achieving an A*!) not long ago, my knowledge of the course is still at the forefront of my mind. Juggling A levels, university applications, interviews and extra-curriculars can become overwhelming so I hope I can alleviate some of that stress in offering good-quality and efficient tutoring sessions. As someone who can relate to these struggles, I can offer general university advice as well as academic help!

Along with A levels, I also achieved 12 grade 9s at GCSE so I believe I am equipped to help GCSE students overcome any academic weaknesses and turn those into strengths. Achieving top grades doesn’t just come from intelligence; efficient study approaches that utilises time the most effectively is also very important along with patience and hard work.

As a tutor, my main goal is to make sure the students fall in love with their subjects and consequently, improve their skills to achieve the top grades!

About the lesson

From struggling students and high achievers, the most important aspect to successful tutoring is tailoring study approaches to the student. Every student learns differently hence must be taught differently. Hence, I will use a variety of approaches to tutor including visual aids like videos and diagrams along with applying the knowledge through past questions.

In the first half of tutoring sessions, I like to begin with stating the broad overview of the topic in question and then explaining the details in chronological order. I believe structuring the content is one of the most effective ways of learning and remembering information. Throughout the explanation, I will ask quickfire questions to make sure the student has grasped the fundamental basis of the topic.

One of the most crucial ways to achieve top grades is to practice applying the knowledge in past exam questions. Hence, in the second half of the session, I like to work through past exam questions and set some for practice outside of the session as well. Many subjects award marks based on writing down key words so this will be a main focus in achieving the top grades.

Fundamentally, I believe my passion toward communicating with students underpins my passion for tutoring. I am committed to help students improve and make tutoring a fun environment rather than a daunting one!
