About Shawn
Growing up, I wanted to be a fighter pilot more than anything. It didn't matter what plane I was shoved in, but all I knew was that I had to be up in the air. This dream stuck with me until my junior year of high school when I had the opportunity to pilot a two-manned glider. While this experience reassured me that my life was meant to be in the sky, I realized I needed greater initiative with my dreams than being a pilot. Emulating the essence of "go big or go home," the learning experience from the glider pointed me in the direction of engineering new aircraft rather than piloting pre-existing ones. Now, until the next chapter of my life at college, I spend my time learning programming, engineering robotic arms, and building mid-tier rockets. I found out that I wanted to pursue Aerospace engineering through a lot of self-reflection and exposure. I understand my way was somewhat unorthodox, but it's one of the best things that ever happened to me. While everyone's process of reflection and clarification is rather different, if I can help a student develop an interest in a subject, even if small, I believe it will open a few more doors in life.

I've realized that in addition to learning math, learning proper studying habits is just as important. Summer provides a great opportunity to begin the following year with a head start, creating an easier and less stressful school year. Because I head off to college next fall, my lessons are meant for middle to high school students. A normal hour-long lesson plan would include reviewing material from the student's class, working through and/or fine-tuning any concepts the student might struggle with, studying more efficiently, and explaining a concept utilized in the world around the student. Explaining how the material can be relevant creates a deeper understanding and interest in math for the student.
